April 17, 1980: Poetic Apprentice
April 17: Ran into Stanley after class. Talking to him I realized how far I’d gone since I was in his class — started talking to him about how the new beginning of “Marjorie” came to me in meditation as a solid chunk. How this morning I suddenly realized there’s another beginning to the poem. How this is the first time a poem has come to me and I just wrote it down. How when I’m revising I feel like a jazz musician putting life into the old notes. Oddly, if I hadn’t stopped to pet a cowering dog at the school door we wouldn’t have met.
Having poetry come to me is an interesting development. I know what the new 1st section in “Marjorie” should be but instead of hacking it out I’m going to wait and see if it comes to me like I believe it will.
Watching “Brewster McCloud” which is very good.
Had a dream about Allen teaching a class & then sitting with the students with someone else teaching & Allen adding anecdotes.
