April 2, 1980: Poetic Apprentice
April 2: Went to my first Naropa Poetry reading tonight. Peter Orlovsky was obnoxious at first — Allen finally told him to be quiet. Allen read “After Later” — a great poem in imitation of Robert Creeley. Then Peter got up and extemporaneously composed three very good poems. Stanley was a little overwhelmed, read too fast, not very clear. Didn’t help that he followed Bill Burroughs, Jr. who was obviously wasted. Even though he’s already had a liver transparent he arrived with a can of beer in either jacket pocket and one in his hand — he read well written but very depressing prose. Then a series of people who read strange stuff I didn’t really understand. It seemed as though they were reading at me rather than to me.
