August 1, 2010, Dinner at the Sink on the Way to “The Taming of the Shrew”

My waitress arrives. She is young and blond and her eyes are red and swollen. She has been crying so hard her cheeks are wet.

“Are you okay? Is there anything I can do?”

“No, I have to learn to take care of myself.”

“Well, that’s true, but if you need a moment we can discuss the menu for as long as you like.”

“No. I’m so behind already.”

“Okay, then I’ll have the Chicago bratwurst with fries and a Coke. But if you need a moment you can always come back. I’ve got a lot of questions about the dessert menu.” We both try to smile.

She disappears into the kitchen and I never see her again. Another young blond waitress brings me my meal and check.
